GDP, Productivity and Wage Growth 2016-2025
U.S. Economic Indicators 2016–2025: Real GDP, Productivity & Wage Growth.

I must admit this is something of the lazy man's research project. However, it's kindasorta hard to make a case for the policies of the late-teen years or 2025 as the way forward.

Key Insights

Real GDP (2016–2025, chained 2017 dollars):
- Total cumulative growth: **31.8%**
- CAGR: **3.12%**
- 2020 was the only contraction year (−1.8%) due to pandemic
- 2021 saw exceptional recovery (+12.6%)
- Growth has moderated 2024–2025 (0.4% → 0.9%)

Productivity (Business Sector, 2017=100):
- Total increase: **18.7%** (2016: 97.5 → 2025: 115.7)
- CAGR: **1.92%**
- Note: 2020 spike (109.0) reflects composition effect and temporary layoffs of lower-paid workers
- Recent acceleration in 2024–2025 (114.9 → 115.7)

Wages & Salaries:
- Cumulative growth (compounded): **36.6%**
- Average annual: **3.40%**
- Peak growth: **5.0% in 2022** (post-pandemic compensation surge)
- **2025 YTD: 3.6%** (moderating)

Wage vs. Productivity:
- Wages have grown **18.0 percentage points faster** than productivity over the full period (36.6% vs. 18.7%)
- This reverses historical patterns where productivity growth often outpaced wage growth
- Peak divergence occurred 2021–2022 during tight labor markets and inflation adjustments
